In India and other Asian countries coconut oil has been used for centuries for hair and skin care. Thanks to Oriental disciplines, including ayurveda, its use has spread throughout the world. The product has rapidly grown in popularity for a variety of reasons, including its manageability and plant origin. It contains lauric acid, which is rich in monolaurin, a monoglyceride (also found in human breast milk) that has antibacterial and antiviral properties.
Thanks to its texture it is easily absorbed by the skin; it is ideal for dry and sensitive skin, since it protects the dermis from dehydration and reddening caused by cold temperatures and sun exposure. Virgin coconut oil, which is 100 per cent pure and cold extracted, is the most natural. It is generally found in the form of soft paste but it liquefies if temperatures exceed 23-24 degreed Celsius. Good coconut oil is characterised by thermosensitivity: if it doesn’t solidify at cold temperatures, it isn’t pure.
Coconut oil to moisturise our skin
It can be used au naturel as a face cream: if it is too thick, melt it in your hands and then apply it onto your skin with circular movements. It is soothing, especially in the drier areas of your body. It nourishes and moisturises the skin as well as makes it fragrant. Also, before you do a manicure, you can apply coconut oil on your fingers, which makes your cuticles softer. Alternate it with olive oil and you’ll prevent stretch marks. Finally, apply it on your lips to protect them.
