India planted 50 million trees in one day

Nello stato indiano dellʼUttar Pradesh sono stati piantati milioni di alberi in 24 ore nell’ambito di un progetto di riforestazione dell’India e lotta all’inquinamento.

India’s feat will have a great impact in terms of raising people’s awareness and setting a new Guinness world record. Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s most populous states, has planted more than 50 million trees in a day. The first tree has been planted by Prime Minister Akhilesh Yadav at 5 a.m. on 11 July. Thousands of people started planting trees of 80 different species shortly after.

800 thousand people planting trees

More than 800,000 people, including students, law makers, government officials and volunteers, took part in the initiative by planting saplings in designated areas along roads, highways, railways and lands.

The initiative aims to fight pollution, a problem afflicting India (one of the world’s most polluted countries), and start a process of reforestation and environmental conservation, as part of the pledges made during the Paris climate change conference. “The world has realized that serious efforts are needed to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global climate change. Uttar Pradesh has made a beginning in this regard,” said Prime Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

A Guinnes World Record

The extraordinary action carried out in northern India secured Uttar Pradesh a Guinnes World Record. The Indian state broke Pakistan’s record of 847,275 trees planted in one day in 2013.

India aims to increase the country’s forest cover to 95 million hectares by 2030

India’s reforestation aim

The Indian government has destined more than 6 billion dollars to plant trees throughout the country, in order to maintain its pledge to extend the country’s forest cover to 95 million hectares by 2030. The long-term survival of the trees planted in mass campaigns is what the department of Forestry is mainly concerned about. Given that only 60 per cent of plants usually survive, the areas will be constantly monitored through aerial photos in order to check saplings’ state of health.
