The Paris Agreement enters into force today, the 4th of November 2016. The signatory countries have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and put in place strategies to combat climate change. The agreement represents a common effort to keep the global temperature rise below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels, aiming to not exceed 1.5°C.
94 countries have ratified the agreement so far, with the United States, China, India, and the European Union in the lead. This represents a historic event as the main carbon-emitting countries have committed for the first time to drastically reducing emissions. Plus, the agreement enters into force in less than a year from COP21.
It is a “turning point in the fight against climate change. It’s a necessary step to save our future and support more sustainable economies and societies,” said Ermete Realacci, chairman of Italy’s Environment Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. “COP22 in Morocco will be an important occasion to take further efforts to reach the common aim of maintaining the temperature rise well below 2 degrees. A challenge we can overcome”.
What’s next with COP22 in Marrakech
COP22 will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, from 7 to 18 November and will be the first occasion for the signatory countries to meet and continue efforts. Countries are expected to pledge to put in place real measures to reduce CO2 emissions. In view of COP22, WWF Italia has conducted a study on policies and measures to support the adoption of sustainable sources of energy instead of coal.
“Coal is the fossil fuel that most emits CO2. Each kWh of energy generated from coal equals to 870 grams of CO2, while from gas is 370 grams and from renewable energies is zero. It’s clear that the use of coal is not compatible with the environmental goals set to combat climate change and, thus, there’s the need of phase out this fossil fuel.
The Paris Agreement on social networks
In occasion of the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, the UNFCCC and the Italian Climate Network have urged each of us to share the event on social networks through articles, blogs and images by using the hashtag #ParisAgreement. Thanks to activists, the voice of the world’s peoples resounded through the COP25 like an alarm bell. Governments didn’t reach the results they demanded, but their cries and messages were stronger than ever, reaching even those who weren’t in Madrid.
Climate change poses a risk for millions. However, women are the most vulnerable to its negative consequences: a few simple considerations by the Italian Climate Network help us perceive the global implications of this.
The COP25 ended two days late and with very few steps ahead made. Climate negotiations in 2020 will be an uphill battle as political will clearly seems to be lacking, once again.
The last ten years have been the most “exceptional” and hottest decade ever, with extreme weather hitting people and ecosystems harder and more frequently. 2019 is also on course to becoming the second or third hottest year since records began.
Unite Behind the Science: this was the title of the conference held at the COP25 on 10 December. Greta Thunberg’s presence filled the arena, but this time it was scientists’ turn to speak.
25,000 delegates meet for the COP25 from 2 to 13 December. What can we hope this UN climate change conference, whose venue was changed from Santiago de Chile to Madrid, will achieve?
100 eminent people from all over the world, including Vandana Shiva, Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky, have signed an open letter after the disappointing results of the COP24. A call-to-arms for climate against world leaders’ indifference.
The outcome of the COP24 in Katowice left many unsatisfied. Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish environmental activist, gave a harsh, heartfelt speech addressing world leaders.
