Renegotiating NAFTA with leaders of Mexico
A meeting between the US administration and a delegation of Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto is expected to be held today, January 25. They will discuss NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), which has been targeted ever since Trump was sworn in. It’s not excluded that they will also discuss the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border. Nieto told his delegates – Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray and Minister for Economic Affairs Ildefonso Guajardo – to remain open to negotiations but to not accept compromise on migrants’ human rights and the freedom of Mexicans to send money to their families in Mexico.

There’s more. January, 25 could also be remembered as the day of the issuing of other executive orders, including one aimed to limit Syrians entering the country. This would mean targeting not only “economic” migrants, i.e. Mexicans, but also refugees desperately fleeing war.
Trump closes borders even to those fleeing war
Washington thus seems not to be prone to making concessions. Indeed, a new executive order is going to tighten the issuing of visas to people from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions, the President’s pick for attorney general, declared that the aim is targeting the countries whose citizens could pose threats to national security, as well as people with “religious views that are inimical to the public safety”.
During his electoral campaign, Donald Trump also proposed to introduce a registry that tracks all Muslims in the country. The proposal, however, is hardly workable as it’s quite impossible creating a list based on geographical and ethnical criteria.
