Tommy Hilfiger launches its first clothing line for disabled children

Tommy Hilfiger, in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Runway of Dreams, presents its new clothing collection for disabled children. Fashion becomes suitable for all.

A simple action such as dressing becomes a daily struggle for those with disabilities. Adapting clothes for disabled people is the idea behind the non-profit organisation Runway of Dreams, founded by Mindy Scheier.

Scheier is a mother of three, including Oliver, who was diagnosed with a rare case of muscular dystrophy. In 2013, using her background in fashion design, the woman decided to launch her project, aimed to create a functional and at the same time trendy clothing line for people with any form of physical disability.

How? After a few months of research, she decides to replace buttons, zippers and hook-and-eyes with closures that use magnets or Velcro; add alternative ways to get in and out of clothes; adapt waistbands, sleeve and pant lengths for those with limb differences or muscular dysfunctions.

“Not only are these modifications possible”, the founder of the organisation said, “they fit into the design process that’s already in place”.

The idea of creating a collection that is suitable for everyone has been recently embraced by Tommy Hilfiger. The famous American clothing brand has realised its first clothing line for disabled children that will already be available only on this website in spring. The pieces were realised according to the solutions tested by the founder of Runway of Dreams during the period of research preceding the collaboration with the international fashion brand.
